Slovakia is first of all land of beautiful unspoiled nature. The land covered with castle ruins. History of Slovakia is closely connected with mining, craftsmans and cultural heritage and folk traditions
We are not here to tell you that Slovakia is a land of dreams and that it is the best country of all. We will explain you how it really is, what the highlights are and what are the weaknesses.
We will start with nature. As based on nature depend everything. As Herodotus wrote about this land 5 centuries before Christ, it is the land of forests and wild bees.
Of course from that times a lot of changed, but we still have a lot of forests. Many of them are part of 9 National parks and 14 Protected environmental areas + many smaller protected areas. National parks itself are covering 6,5 % of whole Slovakia. The oldest was set in 1949. The forests are covering little bit more than 40 % of whole Slovakia.
We can not forget also beautiful caves. Some filled with ice all year, in one you can even travel on boat, one is covered with beautiful aragonit and in one is enormous 32,6 m heigh stalagmit. There are at least 15 worth to see.
In the national park Vysoké Tatry you can see animals like Kamzík vrchovský (Rupicapra rupicapra) or Svišť vrchovský tatranský (Marmota marmota latirostris), which are very typical only for this area.
In the forests of middle and north Slovakia are living quite a number bears. So sometimes you may meet one. DO NOT PANIC. They are usually more scared than you.
Almost whole Slovakia is connected with mining. There are proofs that the mining was already performed in Bronze Age (2000 – 1700 b.c.) in Spania Dolina village.
One of the most fabulous cities are those connected with the mining of Gold – Kremnica, Silver – Banska Stiavnica and Copper – Banska Bystrica in the middle of Slovakia.
The relicts connected with mining are part of UNESCO heritage. In the east part of Slovakia has been mined for centuries precious opal in Dubnik. Nowadays you can still visit some old mines.
Folk traditions are absolutely connected with skills of our grandparents. They were not only miners, but also very skilled craftsmen. You will understand it best in outdoor museums related to our folk traditions. It is also worth to visit one of Slovak famous folk festivals to see the beautiful and unique music. Not only Scots can play on bagpipes. And shepherd’s pipe called Fujara, you must hear J
Land of ruins
Why Slovakia is land of ruins? Unfortunately most of the castles in Slovakia are only stone remains of what were beautiful castles in previous centuries. Or maybe we should not be so sad. Each of the ruins remains us that we have had a colourful past. The rich areas thanks to mining of silver and gold attract many different enemies during centuries. And also policy has said it word and caused even more ruins than enemies.
We like the ruins because one simple reason. IMAGINATION. When you enter such a ruins of castle, your imagination starts to work on maximum. How it was looking before, what was where, how the people lived here? Just to relax and imagine…
And what could be better?
None of the countries is perfect. Neither ours. We will touch only tourism of course. It is possible that if you do not study properly where to go on your own, you can get lost a little bit.(If you are not skilled traveler better get a guide). It happened also to us. And we live here. Sometimes is hard to find some information. Many attractions are closed on Mondays. You can sometimes complain about the service. Not all the waitresses are smiling and not all the hotels are perfect. You can always find some imperfections.
But let’s not be pessimistic.
Even the things are not always perfect here, you will love it. As we do. We will be happy if you will come to know the land of ruins, beautiful unspoiled nature, folk traditions and hard lives of our grandfathers.
