Banska Stiavnica is part of UNESCO world culture heritage. It is a traditional medieval city of middle Europe. The reason why it is part of UNESCO will be clear for you when you enter the city. Preserved medieval buildings with its rich architecture, main squares with monuments, castles and many streets where is worth to get lost as you will explore each time something interesting.
The rich architecture was result of the underground treasure. Banska Stiavnica was one of the most important mining cities during many centuries in Europe. Mostly the silver was mined here. That is why the city was called “silver city”. Banska Stiavnica is famous also for the reason that the University of mining was founded here in 1762. It was the first school focused only on mining worldwide. The mining persist mostly till the end of 19. century.
Worth to see are so called Old castle with its historical exposition, New castle with exposition focused on anti Turkish wars, squares, streets, Mining museum and other attractions.
You should not miss the artificial dams called “tajch”. They are used nowadays for water sports, before they were source of water to move the mining machines.
From the highway called R1 go to Banska Stiavnica and there you can park in the streets of on partially prepared parking places.
