Small city of Levice is situated in the southern part of Slovakia. The volcanic soil and friendly climate dedicates the area for growing grapes.
Almost every villager from surrounding villages has a small garden with grapes. But not everyone is taking care of. Therefore there are many just laying there covered with weed. Those who take care of the grapes sell the grapes to bigger producers of wine or are producing the wine for their own consumption. All old houses has an underground vaults built for wine storage. The temperature is during whole year almost constant. We saw in some vaults specific kinds of fungi. The owners were saying that it has no affect on wine.
Wine is usually degusted in vaults or garden houses called “hajlok”. Testing the wine has always specific atmosphere there. You just need to be careful as the temperature difference during summer could be dangerous. The wine is served using “hever”.
We have participated on the wine testing in village Čajkov near Levice. You will get a glass for testing and brochure describing all the wines from competition with achieved score. For those with high score you shall be fast as they are running out fast.
As we spoke with one of our friends Mr. Kúdela, he offered us visit in his own vault. We agreed of course and went for short visit in situ.
We recommend during tasting breaks to eat traditional tasty Slovak foods.
Except of Čajkov are famous also villages Rybník, Krškany or Nová Dedina. All of them are representing the wine in local cultural houses. The most famous wineries we can recommend are Nichta Uhnák, Frtús. You can find these wines usually in restaurants, hotels and specialized wine shops.
We are very pleased that in such small region are so many top-rated wine producers and we hope that they will continue bringing us these nectars for a long time.
